How AI answers work

Every Clayo docs site and widget comes with AI answers: visitors ask a question in plain language and get a grounded, cited answer from an OpenAI model, based only on your published docs.

Grounded in your docs, nothing else

When a visitor asks a question, Clayo runs a hybrid search over your published articles, combining keyword matching with semantic search so the phrasing does not have to match your docs word for word. The most relevant articles are handed to the model as sources, and the model answers only from them.

Two things follow from that design:

  • Answers cite their sources. Statements carry numbered citations, rendered as chips that link to the cited article. Visitors can always check where an answer came from.
  • No sources means no answer. If nothing relevant is found in your docs, the AI says it does not know and points visitors to your support email instead of improvising. An honest "I don't know, here's a human" beats a confident wrong answer.

Where visitors meet it

The same answer engine appears in two places:

Conversations, not one-shots

Follow-up questions continue the same conversation, so "does that work on the free plan?" is understood in context. A conversation holds up to 15 visitor messages; after that, visitors start a fresh one.

Conversations are anonymous. Clayo stores no visitor identity, and transcripts are kept for 30 days so you can review them in Insights.

Always current

Publishing an article updates the search index within moments; the embeddings that power semantic retrieval refresh automatically on publish. Drafts are never used for answers: the AI only sees what is live.

What it costs you

Every project owner gets 1,000 AI answers included, with no setup. After that, bring your own OpenAI key and answers bill to your key at cost. Search stays free and unlimited either way. Details: Bring your own OpenAI key.
